Simply put, a Sump Pump is a device dedicated to removing water from your home. “But,” you may ask, “isn’t that handled by proper waterproofing?” In fact, a sump pump may be an integral part of waterproofing your home. There are several cases in which you may need one.
Sump pumps and basements the necessary accessory
Although basements are not nearly as common in California as they are in other parts of the country, many homes do have them, It’s obvious that any water that gets into a basement (whether it’s wanted, as in the case of a sink or toilet, or unwanted, as in a leak) must be removed. This is where a sump pump comes in.Sump pumps consist of two basic components. One is a concrete, metal, or plastic basin (called a “sump basin”), in which the water is collected. These are generally 2 or 3 feet deep, and about 2 feet wide.
The second component is the pump itself, which forces the water up to ground level, and allows it to drain away from the house.
When water is high
The other common reason for a sump pump is a high water table. Having water that close to the surface of the ground can cause general drainage issues for your properly, as well as specific conditions in your house itself. In such a case, a sump pump may even be installed below ground in your yard.
